For as long as I can remember, I’ve been drawn to kids who struggle—both the ones who hold it all in and the ones whose big behaviors are cries for help. Whether their pain shows up as shutdowns or meltdowns, anxiety or anger, I see beyond the surface. I see the child who’s overwhelmed, misunderstood, and just trying to cope the best way they know how.
I was one of those kids.
I grew up navigating anxiety and emotional overwhelm without the words or tools to explain what I was feeling. I didn’t misbehave—I disconnected. I believed that staying calm and keeping it together was the only way to stay safe. But inside, I was struggling more than anyone realized.
Joy Melton, MA, EdS, LSP
Licensed School Psychologist
Years later, I became a licensed school psychologist, earned certifications in brain health and integrative health coaching, and devoted my life to understanding what children’s behavior is really telling us. Because I now know what I wish someone had told me back then: behavior is communication. And every child deserves someone who knows how to listen.
In 2021, I lost my younger brother Brenden to mental illness at just 32 years old. I was sixteen when he was born, so he felt more like my child than my sibling. Losing him was devastating—but it became the turning point that clarified my mission: to reach kids earlier. To build emotional resilience before crisis takes hold. And to equip parents with the tools to support their children with connection, not control.
That’s why I created Resilient Kids —to help families understand the nervous system, reduce emotional overwhelm, and build the real-life skills that support long-term wellbeing.
Through parent coaching, psychological services, and sensory-based wellness programs, I help families move from chaos to calm—one nervous system at a time.
If you’ve ever felt like something deeper is going on with your child…
If you’ve tried everything and still feel stuck…
If you’re craving a way to feel more confident and connected as a parent…
Welcome.
You’re not alone. And you’re in the right place.
